Preach on sistah Jacobs!

Subject: RAPE IS NO JOKE
To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing in response to the t-shirt you recently pulled off theshelves ("No Means No - well maybe if I'm drunk"). I am happy to hearthat you received enough outraged response to discontinue the sales ofthis t-shirt, which makes a joke out of rape and sexual assault, twoheinous crimes and abuses that certainly are not a joking matter.

According to the Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network (RAINN), 1 in 6women will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime. In the United States, someone is sexually assaulted every 2 minutes. If you think thesestatistics are horrifying, think about a woman's experience of sexualassault and rape. It is devastating - physically, emotionally, andspiritually - and the terrifying, lonely, and deprecating experienceoften creates a wound that cannot be healed in an entire lifetime.I do not believe that your company simply can remove these t-shirts fromstore shelves and suddenly be absolved of your tasteless and misogynistact.

I am urging you to publicly acknowledge your mistake and use thepublicity created by this acknowledgment to educate others about rapeand sexual assault. You can begin by donating any profit made from yourwoman-hating t-shirts to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, which runs the National Sexual Abuse Hotline and carries out programs toprevent sexual assault, help victims, and ensure that rapists arebrought to justice.

Sincerely,Michelle R. JacobsDoctoral StudentDepartment of SociologyKent State University

MARCH ACTIVISM: Women's History Month

Throughout U.S. history, women of every race and class have made contributions that have helped to shape the country. In 1987, Congress declared the month of March Women’s History Month to recognize these contributions and to promote the teaching of women's history. We will particpate and facilitate women's history with leaflets on our campusses! Join us, and design your own leaflet on women's history for the campus! And/or learn more about the Women's History month from CNN (from which we cite fotograph above and intro-text), The National History od Women Project, who defined art/ists as this year's common theme, or the Akron Women's History Project.
